Artist Statement: I decided to photograph my cousin Violet, she is silly, happy, funny, and constantly asking me questions. She is always wanting to know what you are doing and is easily intrigued but at times you may refer to her more as irritating due to personal space. Violet is so sweet and innocent, she means so much to me. I love her company, constant hugs and her smiles. I took these photos in my backyard under a tree because I loved the way that the light from the sun peered through some of the leaves and onto Violet's face. To arrange the best possible image I lined Violet up directly in the spots that the light peered through the leaves, in other words I made sure that there was plenty of natural light in the image. I had her tilt her chin downwards slightly to bring out her eyes and I tried to position her in an environment that didn't have a distracting background so that she would be the main focus of the photo. Some of the challenges that I faced when photographing Violet were getting her to hold still and putting her in a position that allowed for natural light but not too much that it caused her face to appear dark. I also struggled with finding a background that wasn't distracting so instead I tried using selective focus on her face with my camera. I felt accomplished with the brightness of natural light and framing that I brought to the photograph. I feel like the photos focus is Violet and that there isn't too much informal balance that distracts or takes away from her.
